Governor Uba Sani of Kaduna State has launched Operation TSAFTA, an environmental sanitation initiative designed to strengthen waste management while creating jobs for 5,000 youths and women across the state.
The Governor, who spoke at the official launch of the programme, disclosed that an additional 7,000 jobs would be created in the coming months as the initiative expands.
He said the state government has procured critical sanitation equipment, including Roro bins, dustbins, water tankers, and personal protective gear, to ensure the effective and safe execution of the programme.
“These resources are intended to enhance operational effectiveness, improve safety for workers, and ensure that sanitation activities are carried out in a professional and sustainable manner,” the Governor said.
According to him, the initial phase of Operation TSAFTA will cover four local government areas currently grappling with environmental challenges arising from rapid urbanisation, population growth, and increased commercial activity.
“Lessons learned from this phase will guide the expansion of the programme to other local governments in due course,” he added.
Governor Uba Sani described the initiative as a practical response to the environmental pressures accompanying urban expansion and economic activities in the state.
“A clean and well-managed environment is fundamental to human health, economic productivity, and social stability,” he said, stressing that Operation TSAFTA is part of a broader strategy to embed environmental responsibility into governance and daily life in both urban and rural communities.
The Governor commended the 23 local government councils, the Ministry for Local Government Affairs, and the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources for their collaboration, noting that effective governance thrives on institutional cooperation.
He explained that the programme would empower women and youths through lawful and productive employment, while fostering a sense of ownership and civic responsibility toward environmental protection.
“By linking environmental management with livelihoods, we are encouraging responsible behaviour and reinforcing the idea that environmental protection is a shared civic duty,” he said.
Governor Uba Sani further revealed that Operation TSAFTA prioritises private sector participation, with the engagement of cleaning firms and service providers to improve efficiency, professionalism, and accountability.
“These partnerships are essential for building a resilient environmental management system capable of adapting to growing demands,” he noted.
He added that Kaduna State has begun to gain national recognition as one of the environmentally conscious states in the country, attributing the progress to sound policies, institutional reforms, and citizen cooperation.
