Minister of Defence, General Christopher Musa (Rtd), has called an urgent high-level meeting with the nation’s top military leaders to address the recent surge in attacks on military installations, particularly across the North East region.
The emergency session, held at the Ministry of Defence headquarters in Abuja, brought together key figures including:
Chief of Defence Staff, General Olufemi Oluyede; Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen. Waidi Shaibu; Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Sunday Aneke; Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Idi Abass and senior representatives from the National Intelligence Agency (NIA)
The meeting was prompted by deadly assaults in the North East, where reports indicate that at least three Commanding Officers of Lieutenant-Colonel rank were killed in Borno State, alongside numerous soldiers. Hundreds of civilians remain in captivity amid escalating insecurity.
General Musa stressed the importance of reviewing existing strategies and strengthening counter-terrorism measures.
He reportedly stated that while Nigerian forces have suffered casualties, the terrorists have experienced heavier losses in recent operations.
According to him, the session is critical to ensure that our forces are better coordinated and prepared to respond to these threats, while underscoring the government’s commitment to safeguarding both military personnel and civilians.
The emergency meeting aligns with broader initiatives by the Defence Ministry to enhance intelligence-sharing and operational innovation, including the introduction of monthly operational briefings aimed at eradicating terrorism, insurgency, and banditry across Nigeria.
