Sokoto State Governor, Ahmed Aliyu, has reaffirmed the critical role of journalists in strengthening democracy and promoting accountability, describing them as indispensable partners in the pursuit of good governance.
The governor made this known on Thursday night while hosting members of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Sokoto State chapter, alongside chairmen, secretaries, and treasurers of the seven NUJ chapels in the state, at a special Ramadan Iftar.
According to him, both traditional and social media platforms have continued to play a vital role in deepening transparency and holding public officials accountable.
He said journalists are “worthy partners in the business of ensuring good governance,” noting that they not only hold leaders accountable but also help shape public discourse by setting the agenda.
While acknowledging the importance of the media, Governor Aliyu urged practitioners to remain committed to the ethics of the profession. He stressed that his administration welcomes constructive criticism and remains focused on delivering its promise of building a “new Sokoto State.”
The governor also used the occasion to call on Nigerians to embrace peaceful coexistence, pointing out the unique significance of this year’s religious observances. He noted that it was special because both Muslims and Christians commenced Ramadan and Lent on the same day.
Reiterating his commitment to inclusive governance, Aliyu assured journalists of open access to his administration. He encouraged them to always seek clarification through the Director General of Media and Publicity to ensure balanced reporting before publishing stories.
On security, the governor disclosed that his administration has taken decisive steps to improve safety across the state. He revealed that over 200 vehicles, hundreds of motorcycles, and other logistics have been provided to security agencies to enhance their operations.
In appreciation of the support and cooperation received from the media, Governor Aliyu announced the donation of an official vehicle to the NUJ. He also promised that pending requests from the union, including the rehabilitation of the Press Centre and inclusion of journalists in state committees, would be addressed by the Secretary to the State Government (SSG).
Earlier, the NUJ State Chairman, Comrade Usman Mohammed Binji, commended the governor for fostering a strong working relationship with journalists. He noted that such engagements create opportunities for meaningful dialogue between the government, traditional media, and new media stakeholders.
Binji added that the governor has made “huge progress in transforming Sokoto State,” especially in education, healthcare, security, youth and women empowerment, and rural development. He referenced several completed and ongoing projects within the past three years as evidence of this progress.
The event’s highlight was the presentation of an Award of Appreciation to Governor Ahmed Aliyu by the NUJ, in recognition of his support and commitment to the media in Sokoto State.
