College of Education (COE) Oju, located in the Oju Local Government Area of Benue State, has begun taking proactive steps to restore its former prestige, which had been compromised due to mismanagement that nearly led to its closure.
This initiative follows a courtesy visit by the current management to Governor Hyacinth Iormem Alia in July 2025.
Before this, the college had experienced a significant exodus of lecturers, both skilled and unskilled workers, who left unexpectedly in search of better opportunities. This was largely attributed to unpaid salaries, lack of motivation, and deteriorating infrastructure.
Prof. Odeh Boniface Ogbu, the head of the new management team, is dedicating his efforts to realigning the college with its primary objectives in all areas.
During a courtesy call from members of the State Executive Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) at his office in Oju, the Provost, Prof. Odeh, expressed gratitude to Governor Alia for entrusting him with the appointment. He assured that he was committed not only to repositioning the institution but also to elevating it to a respected status among Nigeria’s colleges of Education.
Prof. Odeh also shared that upon taking office, he oversaw the clearance of overgrown bushes infested with reptiles, making the campus habitable for staff and students. He also liaised with the National Council on Colleges of Education (NCCE) for course accreditation.
He reported that the 29 courses submitted to the NCCE, including Special Education, Agriculture Education and Extension, and Political Science, have all been approved.
Among other achievements, the management has rejuvenated seven boreholes, restored a 33kva electricity line, repaired six broken-down vehicles, and renovated several dilapidated structures within the school.
Prof. Odeh added that student numbers, both new and returning, have increased from fewer than 200 to over 300 since he assumed office. However, he lamented the shortage of staff and mentioned that the management has officially requested the Governor’s approval to recruit additional personnel.
The Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, Benue State Council, Comrade Bemdoo Ugber, acknowledged the Provost’s efforts and achievements so far.
He remarked that Prof. Odeh’s appointment was not only a recognition of his academic excellence and administrative ability but also a vote of confidence in his capacity to lead the institution to greater heights.
He assured the union’s ongoing support and commitment to promoting the college, given the positive relationship shared with the institution.
