Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) has commenced a comprehensive investigation into the collision between a container vessel and an oil tanker at Bonny Anchorage in Rivers State.
The incident, which occurred on May 20, 2026, has been classified by the agency as a “Very Serious Marine Casualty.”
Following reports of the accident, the Bureau activated its marine emergency response procedures and deployed a specialised team to Onne and Bonny on May 22 to preserve evidence and begin preliminary inquiries.
Investigators boarded the affected vessels, interviewed their Masters and key crew members, and secured relevant operational and navigational records for further analysis.
According to the NSIB, “The team boarded both vessels and carried out extensive evidence-gathering procedures, including interviews with the Masters and essential crew members. Relevant operational documents and navigational records were also secured for analysis.”
The agency also confirmed the successful retrieval of data from the Voyage Data Recorder (VDR) and Electronic Chart Display and Information System (ECDIS) of MV Maersk Valparaiso for forensic examination.
In line with international maritime requirements, the Bureau has notified Singapore’s Transport Safety Investigation Bureau and is engaging local and foreign stakeholders connected to the incident. While assuring the public of an independent and professional investigation, the NSIB cautioned that “It would be premature to speculate on the probable causes at this stage.
The Bureau strongly urges the public and all stakeholders to refrain from speculation while investigations continue.”
