Manchester United coach, Michael Carrick
Former Manchester United midfielder Michael Carrick is set to remain in charge of Manchester United on a permanent basis after receiving the backing of the club hierarchy.
Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano reported that the decision had already been settled internally for weeks, with co owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe approving the move to keep Carrick in charge.
The report added that Carrick is expected to sign either a two year contract with an option to extend or a straight three year deal.
There is also no doubt over the decision from the manager’s side as Carrick has already agreed to continue in the role.
Carrick’s rise to the permanent position follows a strong turnaround since replacing Ruben Amorim earlier this year.
Since taking over, the 44 year old has managed 15 Premier League matches, winning 10, drawing three and losing only two while collecting 33 points, the highest total in the league within that period.
Under him, United climbed from seventh place into the top three and secured qualification for next season’s UEFA Champions League.
His spell in charge has also included key wins against Manchester City, Arsenal, Liverpool, Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur, results that helped swing momentum firmly in his favour.
Carrick had earlier impressed during his first spell as interim manager in 2021 after the departure of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
In that short run, United defeated Villarreal 2-0 in the UEFA Champions League, played out a 1-1 draw away at Chelsea and beat Arsenal 3-2 before Carrick stepped aside following the arrival of Ralf Rangnick.
Beyond results, people around the club believe his calm personality and strong connection with players played a major role in the decision.
Young midfielder Kobbie Mainoo has developed into a key figure under Carrick’s guidance, while defender Patrick Dorgu is also understood to have shown steady improvement in recent months.
Several members of the squad are said to have responded positively to his coaching approach, tactical clarity and man management style inside the dressing room.
The move is also being viewed as another attempt by United to restore stability after years of constant managerial changes since the retirement of Sir Alex Ferguson in 2013.
Since Ferguson’s departure, the club has gone through several managers including David Moyes, Louis van Gaal, Jose Mourinho, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, Ralf Rangnick, Erik ten Hag and Ruben Amorim.
Carrick, who spent 12 years at Old Trafford as a player, remains highly respected among supporters after winning five Premier League titles and the UEFA Champions League during his playing career.
Manchester United are expected to make the appointment official once final contract details are completed.
