Nigerian superstar, Jay-Jay Okocha in action
Nigerian football icon, Austin “Jay-Jay” Okocha remains the holder of the FIFA World Cup record for the most successful dribbles in a single match, more than three decades after setting the remarkable milestone.
According to FIFA, Okocha completed an incredible 15 successful dribbles during Nigeria’s Round of 16 encounter against Italy at the 1994 FIFA World Cup in the United States. Despite the passage of time and the emergence of several football greats, no player has surpassed the Nigerian’s record-setting performance.
The feat continues to rank among the most outstanding individual displays in World Cup history and highlights Okocha’s exceptional skill, creativity and ability to dominate opponents on football’s biggest stage.
Former Brazil star Jairzinho and ex-England midfielder Paul Gascoigne share second place on the all-time list, having each registered 13 successful dribbles in a single World Cup match. Jairzinho achieved the feat against Uruguay during the 1970 tournament, while Gascoigne matched it in England’s memorable clash with Cameroon at the 1990 World Cup.
Several other football legends have also etched their names into FIFA’s dribbling records. Nine players have recorded 12 successful dribbles in a World Cup match, including Portugal’s Eusebio, West Germany’s Reinhard Libuda, Dutch great Johan Cruyff, Italy’s Sandro Mazzola, Argentina legend Diego Maradona and Germany’s Jamal Musiala.
FIFA’s statistics also show that Argentine superstar Lionel Messi holds the record for the highest number of successful dribbles across World Cup appearances, accumulating 125 throughout his tournament career.
Maradona, meanwhile, remains the player with the most successful dribbles in a single World Cup edition after completing 53 during his inspirational campaign at the 1986 tournament in Mexico.
Okocha’s enduring record further cements his status as one of Africa’s finest footballers and a symbol of Nigerian football excellence. His dazzling display against Italy in 1994 remains a reference point for individual brilliance at the FIFA World Cup and a source of pride for Nigerian football fans around the world.
