Taraba State Governor, Agbu Kefas, has praised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for creating an environment where the different arms of government can operate independently, saying the development has helped strengthen Nigeria’s democracy.
Governor Kefas made the remarks in his message to mark the 2026 Democracy Day celebration. The statement was released to journalists in Jalingo on Friday by his Special Adviser on Media and Digital Communication, Hon. Emmanuel Bello.
He described democracy as the best form of government despite the challenges confronting the system. He stressed the importance of the separation of powers, an independent judiciary, and a free press in sustaining democratic governance.
According to him, Nigeria’s democratic journey has endured several tests over the years but has continued to grow stronger.
“Dr. Kefas admonished all and sundry to continue to work together to advance the frontiers of democracy. He emphasized citizens’ participation in keeping the rule of law sacrosanct. He said citizens must know and value their roles in the social contract entered into through the ballot.”
The governor also urged Nigerians to protect and cherish their voting rights, describing them as a vital pillar of democracy.
“The governor further noted that the right to vote is one that citizens must continue to protect and cherish with all sense of responsibility.”
Kefas commended the media for its contributions to democratic development, noting that journalists and media organisations have continued to play a key role in promoting accountability and justice.
“Consequently, Dr. Kefas applauded the role the media has played (and is still playing) in enriching the Nation’s democracy. He particularly noted the resistance to tyranny and the fight against injustice championed by the media.”
He reaffirmed his administration’s support for freedom of expression, saying a vibrant and independent press remains essential to the survival of democracy.
“Dr. Kefas further stressed that no democracy can survive without a free press, noting that his government supports the freedom of expression as enshrined in the constitution.”
The governor also paid tribute to members of the armed forces for their contributions to Nigeria’s democratic growth and stability.
“Consequently, Dr. Kefas saluted the Nation’s armed forces for their role in deepening the nation’s democratic experience.”
Reflecting on Nigeria’s democratic history, Kefas honoured statesmen and other citizens who fought against authoritarian rule and helped lay the foundation for constitutional governance.
“Going down history lane, Dr. Kefas paid homage to statesmen and all who ‘fought authoritarianism to bequeath to us a solid system of governance based on the rule of law and constitutionalism’. Their labour and dreams shall not be in vain. Our country today, therefore, stands as a testimony to their legendary sacrifices and the foundations they have laid.”
