No fewer than 3 security personnel were killed in a security breach that occurred in the early hours of Tuesday near the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPSS), Kuru, Jos South LGA in Plateau State.
The Plateau State Police Command confirmed the incident in a statement issued on June 16, describing the development as unfortunate and assuring residents that the situation had been brought under control.
Police Public Relations Officer, SP Alfred Alabo, said the affected personnel were on duty at the time of the incident.
“Regrettably, three security personnel lost their lives during the incident,” the statement said.
Following the attack, the Commissioner of Police, CP Bassey Ewah, ordered the deployment of additional security personnel to the area and intensified patrol operations to prevent any further breach of security.
The command urged residents to remain calm and continue with their lawful activities, noting that normalcy had been restored in the area.
Meanwhile, the management of NIPSS said the incident occurred in the vicinity of the institute and was swiftly contained through the prompt intervention of security operatives and other relevant agencies.
In a statement signed by the Head of Public Affairs Department, Dr. Osime Samuel, the institute assured participants, staff and residents that there was no threat to lives or property within the institution.
“The situation was promptly brought under control through the swift response of security personnel and relevant security agencies. There is currently no threat to the safety of participants, staff, residents or facilities of the institute, and normal activities are continuing as scheduled,” the statement read.
The institute disclosed that security agencies had commenced investigations into the circumstances surrounding the incident and cautioned members of the public against relying on unverified reports circulating on social media and other unofficial platforms.
According to NIPSS, it is working closely with relevant authorities and will provide verified information as investigations progress.
Both the police and the institute assured the public that further updates would be communicated as more details emerge from ongoing investigations.
