Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has called for stronger commitment to ensuring that every African child has access to clean water, sanitation, and hygiene facilities, describing them as fundamental requirements for healthy growth and development.
In a message commemorating the Day of the African Child 2026, the First Lady joined millions across Africa in advocating for the rights and welfare of children under this year’s theme, “Ensuring universal access to water, sanitation, and hygiene for every child in Africa.”
According to her, access to safe water and proper sanitation remains critical to the health, dignity, education, and future prospects of children across the continent.
“Access to clean water, proper sanitation, and good hygiene is essential for the well-being, health, dignity, education, and future of our children,” she said.
The First Lady stressed that every child, regardless of social or economic background, deserves access to basic amenities that support learning, growth, and overall well-being.
“Our children, regardless of their background, should have access to the basic amenities needed to grow, learn, and thrive,” she stated.
Senator Tinubu further urged governments, communities, development partners, and other stakeholders to work together in creating environments that promote children’s welfare and protect their future.
“I believe all hands must be on deck to build child-friendly communities, strengthen public health systems, and create safe, healthy environments where every child can thrive and reach their full potential,” she added.
The Day of the African Child is observed annually to raise awareness about issues affecting children across the continent and to encourage actions that promote their rights, welfare, and development.
The First Lady concluded her message by wishing children across Africa a memorable celebration.
