
Head coach of ABU Basketball team, Scott Nnaji
Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria, has appointed renowned basketball coach and administrator, Scott Nnaji, as the Head Coach of its basketball team and General Manager of the university’s proposed Basketball Academy.
The dual appointment, contained in a contract letter signed by the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Adamu Ahmed, is aimed at strengthening the institution’s rich basketball tradition while laying the foundation for a world-class basketball academy.
Nnaji, who is the President of the Basketball Coaches Association of Nigeria (BCAN) and a member of the technical committee of the Nigeria Basketball Federation (NBBF), is expected to provide strategic leadership that will enhance the university’s competitiveness in collegiate basketball and develop young talents.
According to the Vice-Chancellor, the appointment reflects the university’s confidence in Nnaji’s wealth of experience, proven leadership and unwavering commitment to the growth of basketball in Nigeria.
Prof. Ahmed noted that, as an alumnus of ABU and a product of its celebrated basketball tradition, Nnaji possesses a deep understanding of the institution’s sporting culture and is well-positioned to restore and sustain its legacy of excellence.
He said the veteran coach would also spearhead the establishment of the university’s Basketball Academy, which is expected to serve as a centre for talent discovery, athlete development and academic advancement, while creating opportunities for young Nigerians to pursue rewarding careers through sports.
Nnaji brings decades of coaching and administrative experience to the new role.
He began his coaching career with the Nigeria Customs Service basketball team in 2000, leading the side to impressive performances before moving on to coach Nigeria’s Under-18 men’s national team, the Junior Tigers.
He also served as head coach of Nigeria’s senior women’s national basketball team and has handled several domestic clubs, including Plateau United and Wikki Tourists, where he earned recognition for his emphasis on discipline, technical excellence and player development.
Beyond the sidelines, Nnaji has remained a leading advocate for the growth of basketball in Nigeria. As BCAN President, he has championed coaching development, mentorship programmes, structural reforms and increased private sector investment in the game, while promoting greater opportunities for women and young athletes.
The university expressed confidence that Nnaji’s leadership, experience and vision would inspire a new generation of student-athletes and further position ABU as one of Nigeria’s foremost centres for basketball development.
