Super Eagles head coach, Eric Chelle, has challenged his players to raise their game despite Nigeria’s 2-1 victory over Tanzania in their opening fixture of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
While pleased with the winning start, Chelle admitted the performance exposed areas that must be fixed quickly as the competition intensifies. He noted that Nigeria dominated large spells of the match, particularly in the first half, but lapses after the break gave Tanzania a foothold.
“At this level, small details decide games. We played well, but we must reduce our mistakes, especially against stronger opponents,” Chelle said.
The coach described the result as encouraging, stressing that early victories are important in building confidence, but warned that discipline and game management will be crucial as the Super Eagles chase continental glory.
According to Chelle, the encounter offered valuable lessons for the technical crew as they prepare for tougher challenges in the group.
“AFCON is about consistency. We will analyse this game carefully and make the necessary corrections before the next match,” he added.
Chelle expressed satisfaction with the team’s fighting spirit and attacking intent, but insisted that improvement remains the central goal in what he described as a long and demanding AFCON journey.
He confirmed that the technical team would immediately review the match footage to address identified lapses ahead of Saturday’s crucial clash against Tunisia. The coach also highlighted the need for better off-the-ball movement, noting that although the win was deserved, significant work still lies ahead for the Eagles. (NAN)
