Ahead of their first match in the new Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) campaign, members of Nigeria’s Super Eagles have begun to reap the full rewards of their historic run at the 2023 AFCON in Côte d’Ivoire.
The players, fondly known as the Super Eagles Class of 2024, have formally received their National Honours certificates as well as title documents to houses allocated to them in Abuja or Lagos, alongside land grants in Abuja. The incentives were part of the package promised by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, following the team’s impressive second-place finish at the continental tournament held between January and February 2024.
The presentation took place at the team’s hotel in Fez, Morocco, on December 22, 2025, during a brief but symbolic ceremony.
It was led by the Chairman of the National Sports Commission (NSC), Shehu Dikko, who was joined by members of a high-powered delegation, including the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Sports, Senator Abdul Ningi; Chairman of the House Committee on Sports, Hon. Kabiru Amadu; Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Customs Service, Bashir Adewale; President of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), Ibrahim Gusau; Senior Special Assistant to the President, Mrs. Nathan-Mash; Nigerian High Commission officials; and Mallam Saleh Amadu, among others.
Speaking at the event, Dikko clarified the categories of honours awarded to the players. “All the players are recipients of the Member of the Order of the Niger (MON), except Ahmed Musa and Victor Osimhen, who are awarded the Officer of the Order of the Niger (OON), having previously received the MON,” he said. “William Troost-Ekong is honoured with the Member of the Federal Republic (MFR) for emerging as Player of the Tournament.”
Dikko further confirmed that the National Honours, housing allocations and land grants approved by President Tinubu have been fully processed. According to him, allocation letters and title documents were issued in line with the President’s pledge to recognise excellence, patriotism and service to the nation.
He also disclosed that similar reward packages approved for the Super Falcons and the D’Tigers have reached an advanced stage of implementation.
“The title documents for houses and National Honours certificates for the Super Falcons and D’Tigers are ready for collection, while the cash awards—equivalent to $100,000—are being finalised by the Office of the Minister of Finance and the Accountant-General of the Federation for direct payment to the athletes’ accounts,” Dikko added.
The development has been widely praised as a sign of a more structured and transparent approach to athlete welfare in Nigeria. With the administrative formalities now concluded, the Super Eagles have shifted their full attention back to the pitch as they pursue qualification and success in their next AFCON journey.
