Former Head of State, Yakubu Gowon
Senate President Godswill Akpabio has extended warm birthday wishes to former Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon (rtd), as he clocks 91, praising him as a symbol of unity and a guiding light in Nigeria’s post-war reconciliation.
In a message issued on Monday in Abuja, Akpabio recalled Gowon’s enduring legacy, particularly his famous “No Victor, No Vanquished” policy, which he said helped lay the foundation for national healing after the civil war.
“On behalf of my family, constituents, the Senate and the 10th National Assembly, I wish to heartily rejoice with our former Head of State, His Excellency, Gen. Yakubu Gowon, on the occasion of his 91st birthday. It is a thing of joy to see him reach this milestone in life,” Akpabio said.
He praised the elder statesman’s continued advocacy for peace and dialogue across generations, noting that his influence remains deeply relevant in today’s Nigeria.
“Sir, your leadership during and after Nigeria’s civil war continues to shape our history, and your ‘No Victor, No Vanquished’ policy remains a beacon of unity and national healing,” he stated.
Akpabio described Gowon as a true unifier whose contributions, both in and out of office, will be fondly remembered by history.
“I pray that God grants you many more years of good health, strength, and wisdom. Your life’s work is a testament to your dedication to Nigeria’s progress. Happy birthday, Your Excellency, and congratulations, sir,” he concluded.
