PATRICK ABANG, Calabar –
As part of efforts to improve on the standard of education in Akpabuyo LGA of Cross River State, the Chairman of council, Rt Hon. Emmanuel Offiong Bassey has presented over 500 desks to seven primary schools in the LGA.
During the presentation of desks, Honourable Bassey lamented over the poor learning conditions of children in primary Schools In Akpabuyo LGA.
He noted that in the second batch, they would also capture another sets of schools in the nearest possible time until a reasonable number of primary schools In the area are provided with desks for children
He said: “It is a pity that in this modern age you find school students sitting on the bare floor to take their lessons”.
Hon. Bassey explained that provision of educational facilities is not part of his responsibility but an act of intervention.in his LGA. He however, noted that it is the primary responsibility of State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB).
He faulted SUBEB and NDDC over the deplorable state of learning for school children in the LGA.
“What ever that happens in SUBEB is not enough to allow the children sit on bare floor to take lessons. I am appealing to SUBEB and The NDDC to come to the aid of these children and intervene because the situation is pathetic”.
On his part, The leader of Akpabuyo legislative council, Honourable Elijah, commended the efforts of the council chairman for taking that prompt action in providing desks for primary schools children in Akpabuyo.
He said what the chairman has done is the enforcement of a resolution which emanated from the legislature calling on him to provide desks for primary schools In the area”.
“We are very happy today for the prompt action taken by the chairman of council in providing seats for our children in primary schools, he has listening ear, he is a father”, he said.
