Sokoto State Governor, Ahmed Aliyu
Sokoto State Governor, Ahmed Aliyu, has charged local government leaders and councillors across the state to intensify efforts in delivering democratic dividends to grassroots communities.
The charge was given during a high-level political strategy meeting held at the Kasarawa International Conference Center, where the governor met with the 23 local government chairmen, their deputies, and 244 councillors.
The meeting came amid growing speculations that some politicians, reportedly led by Ibrahim Lamido, are being sponsored from unconfirmed sources in Abuja to organise a parallel congress of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state.
Addressing party leaders and elected officials from across the local government areas, Governor Aliyu stressed that grassroots communities remain the backbone of democratic participation and must not be neglected.
“Grassroots constitute the majority of the electorate and our die-hard supporters who must be carried along,” the governor stated.
He noted that while his administration is implementing several developmental projects across the state, local government chairmen and councillors must replicate similar initiatives in their respective wards.
Explaining the purpose of the meeting, Governor Aliyu said it was convened to assess the progress and challenges surrounding the ongoing APC e-registration exercise at the grassroots level, with a view to finding lasting solutions.
He commended party supporters for their impressive turnout during the exercise and urged those yet to register to do so without delay.
The governor, further, disclosed that the gathering would enable stakeholders to evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of the party across the 23 local government areas and take proactive steps where necessary.
To achieve meaningful outcomes, he appealed to participants to contribute openly.
“And towards achieving the needed outcomes, the governor appealed to all APC stakeholders present at the meeting to freely air their views, suggestions and possible recommendations, adding that will go a long way in helping the party to achieve set objectives,” the statement said.
Earlier, the State APC Chairman, Isa Saddiq Achida, praised Governor Aliyu’s leadership style, describing it as people-oriented and development-driven.
According to him, the governor’s inclusive approach has been instrumental in the transformation currently being witnessed across the state.
In his welcome address, the Commissioner for Local Governments and Chieftaincy Affairs, Ibrahim Dadi Adare, also commended the governor for his foresight in convening the meeting with elected local government officials.
He said the engagement would strengthen coordination between the state government and local councils in advancing development and party unity.
