Anambra State Government has terminated the employment of eight operatives from the Agunechemba security outfit following their assault on a female National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member.
The announcement was made by Ken Emeakayi, Special Adviser to Governor Chukwuma Soludo on Community Security, during a briefing at the agency’s headquarters in Awka on Wednesday.
Emeakayi revealed that the operatives, who were pursuing suspected cultists on Tuesday, attacked the corps member in an act he condemned as “beyond their mandate and utterly unacceptable.”
He confirmed that the dismissed operatives would be handed over to the police for prosecution.
“The Soludo administration has zero tolerance for unprofessional conduct, brutality, or abuse of power by security personnel,” Emeakayi stated, emphasizing that any officer found guilty of misconduct would face immediate dismissal and legal action.
The incident, captured in a viral video showing the operatives assaulting and stripping the corps member, sparked widespread outrage.
The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) condemned the operatives’ actions, and the victim’s lawyer, Cyrus Onu, demanded justice.
“We have petitioned the Anambra State Government and the Attorney General of the Federation, calling for the prosecution of these operatives and compensation for the victim,” Onu said.
He added, “We are seeking not only criminal prosecution but also compensatory damages from the security outfit and the state government, led by Governor Soludo, within the legal timeframe.”
Emeakayi described the incident as a pivotal moment for reforming the Agunechemba outfit and rebuilding public trust.
“The government is fully committed to ensuring professionalism, accountability, and respect for human rights in all security operations,” he affirmed.
