Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, Nyesom Wike, has kicked off a major water supply network expansion project in Bwari Area Council, Abuja, aimed at improving access to clean water.
Speaking at the project’s inauguration on Wednesday, Wike assured residents that the initiative, backed by President Bola Tinubu, would be completed without delays.
“This project will not be abandoned. We will start and finish it,” he declared, emphasizing Tinubu’s commitment to fulfilling his pledge to provide potable water across Abuja’s satellite towns.
Wike highlighted that the project, originally slated for 18 months, would be fast-tracked following the contractor’s agreement to expedite delivery.
He noted that President Tinubu had approved an upfront payment of 50% of the contract sum to CGC Nigeria Limited to ensure timely completion.
“The President is a man who keeps his promises, and we’re seeing that commitment here,” Wike said, adding that the initiative would create over 1,600 jobs and reduce reliance on unsafe borehole water.
The minister called on traditional rulers, youths, and women in the community to protect the project from vandalism.
FCT Minister of State, Dr. Mariya Mahmoud, echoed Wike’s sentiments, stating, “Access to clean water will significantly boost public health and improve living standards.”
She praised Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda for prioritizing essential infrastructure like water supply.
Acting Executive Secretary of the Federal Capital Development Authority (FCDA), Richard Dauda, described the project as a key component of the FCT Regional Master Plan to develop satellite towns alongside the city center. Spanning over 198 kilometers of pipelines, the initiative will serve Bwari Township, Ushafa, Kuduru, Jigo, Kuchuku, and surrounding areas.
Dauda added that the project would extend to Karu, Kuje, Kwali, Gwagwalada, and Abaji before the end of Tinubu’s tenure.
