Veteran English official Anthony Taylor has announced his retirement from professional football officiating, bringing an end to an illustrious career that spanned more than two decades at the highest level of the game.
Taylor confirmed his decision on Tuesday, describing his time as one of football’s leading referees as “an immense privilege” while admitting the moment had come to step away from the pitch.
“It has been an immense privilege,” Taylor said.
“Officiating at the elite level has allowed me to be part of some of football’s biggest occasions.
The time is now right to step aside and look forward to the next chapter of my career.”
The 47 year old leaves the game as one of the Premier League’s most experienced referees.
Over a 20 year career, he officiated more than 800 professional matches, including 432 Premier League fixtures across 16 seasons.
His consistency and experience earned him appointments to some of the biggest domestic and international competitions.
A FIFA listed referee for 14 years, Taylor took charge of matches at the 2022 and 2026 FIFA World Cups, UEFA European Championships and several UEFA club competitions.
He also joined a select group of officials to referee every major domestic final in English football, including two FA Cup finals, underlining the confidence placed in him by English and European football authorities.
While his career was filled with notable achievements, Taylor also became one of football’s most talked about referees.
Several high profile decisions sparked fierce debate among supporters, players and managers, with his performances frequently coming under intense scrutiny.
Despite the criticism, he remained a regular choice for elite fixtures, a testament to the trust placed in his judgement by the Professional Game Match Officials Limited and UEFA.
