All Progressives Congress (APC) has downplayed the impact of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar’s resignation from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), asserting that it poses no challenge to the party’s stronghold as the 2027 general elections approach.
In a statement released on Wednesday, the APC’s Lagos State spokesperson, Mr. Seye Oladejo, described Atiku’s departure from the PDP and his potential alignment with the African Democratic Congress (ADC) as a futile gesture that will not alter the political landscape.
“Atiku’s exit from the PDP is a desperate, yet predictable, move that reflects the opposition’s disarray,” Oladejo declared.
“It confirms the PDP’s internal collapse and Atiku’s lack of political consistency.”
Atiku, who represented the PDP as its presidential candidate in 2019 and 2023, announced his resignation from the party on Wednesday, citing irreconcilable differences.
Sources indicate that his coalition has adopted the ADC as its platform for the 2027 elections, signaling a strategic shift amid the PDP’s ongoing post-election turmoil and failure to mount a robust opposition.
Oladejo dismissed any notion that Atiku’s move to the ADC would bolster its electoral prospects or weaken the APC’s grip, particularly in Lagos and across Nigeria.
“Whether it’s PDP, ADC, or another platform, Nigerians are politically discerning and will not be swayed by opportunism,” he stated.
“The APC remains the only party delivering tangible governance, economic progress, and robust infrastructure.”
Highlighting Atiku’s history, Oladejo remarked, “Atiku’s actions reflect ambition without principle, driven not by ideology but by a relentless personal pursuit.
“Political instability often follows him, and Nigeria deserves better than recycled politics.”
He emphasized that Atiku’s defection provides voters an opportunity to assess the integrity and consistency of aspiring leaders.
Oladejo urged APC supporters in Lagos to stay united and engaged at the grassroots level to ensure continued electoral success.
“Our victory hinges on our unity, our track record of performance, and our commitment to people-centered development,” he said.
“Nigerians deserve visionary leadership, not theatrical comebacks. The APC is ready to lead and win in 2027.”
The APC’s confident dismissal of Atiku’s move underscores its focus on sustaining national unity, driving sustainable progress, and delivering purposeful leadership as the nation gears up for the next electoral cycle.
