The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) of the Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto on Wednesday gave scholarship to 14 indigent students.

Giving insights into the scholarship, the ASUU Chairman of UDUS chapter, Prof Nuradeen Almustapha, said 2 of the 14 will get the national scholarship of N200,000 each while the remaining 12 will get the UDUS chapter’s own of N50,000 each.

Addressing beneficiaries of the scholarship, Processor Faruk Muhammed Tambuwal, who represented Professor Abubakar Sabo, the Sokoto Zonal Coordinator of ASUU appealed to them to make judicious use of the money given to them.

“”Though, the scholarship might not be much, however, I am appealing to beneficiaries to ensure that, every kobo is used in the best way it can make positive impact on their lives””.

While urging students to aways support ASUU, Prof Sabo assured that all their struggle is for the good of public institutions and not of any selfish interest as wrongly construed by some.

On his part, Prof Shehu Tsagem, the deputy Dean, Students Affairs, who represented the Dean Students Affairs, Prof Umar Aliyu, further, urged beneficiaries to be reasonable in using the money for their educational pursuits and not otherwise.

Lending his voice to the series of advise, the Vice Chancellor of Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto, Prof Lawal Bilbis represented by Prof Aminu Muhammed, commended ASUU for sparing out something to give scholarship to indigent students’ out of their little income.

Continuing, Prof Bilbis said, the proposed students loan by the Federal Government was simply a ploy to further enrich few individuals, adding that, rather than a loan, the government should rather consider students’ grants as best option.

“”ASSU is the only union in Nigeria that stands for students interest. When we were against the plans by the Federal Government to increase fees in public institutions, many felt we were been selfish, but now, most parents are beginning to see the reality.

“Parents are now finding it difficult to send their wards back to school because of harsh economic realities”.

Expressing appreciations to ASUU, both Isa Abdulrashid and James Glory Jumoke of Radiography and Sociology Departments that got the national scholarship of N200,000 each, said they lack words to describe how grateful they are.

Those that got the UDUS chapter of the 50,000 naira scholarship each include Usman Aliyu Khalid, Abdullahi Laila, Mohammed Shehu Dogon Daji, Abdulrahaman Opkeyemi, and Mariam Auwal.

In his goodwill message, the State chairman of NLC, Comrade Salisu Husaini Hamisu, who assured that the NLC will strive to emulate the gesture, also appealed to beneficiaries to always remember that what they got is a seed that should propel them to also invest in the lives of others in due course.

Responding to the gesture on behalf of benefiting students, UDUS Student Union Government (SUG) president, Comrade, Abdullahi Sanusi, commended ASUU for always having the interest of the masses at heart.

In a vote of thanks, Dr Sadiq Adina, the UDUS ASUU Secretary, said they followed a laid down measure to select the beneficiaries.
