The Executive Director, Community Advocates for Rural Development (CARD), Habiba Ajufoh, has called on Nigerian youths to strive to be change agents and innovators on climate change issues in the country and the world at large.
She also called on them to lend their voices to issues of climate change that affect them and their environments and to proffer solutions to these challenges.
Ajufoh was speaking over the weekend at the third edition of the National Local Conference of Youth LCOY Nigeria 2024 which was held at the Conference Hall of the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Teaching Hospital, Bauchi.
She said that her organization, CARD, is the leading organization that organized the conference whose license was given by the Youth Constituency Arm of the United Nations which is called ‘Youngo’.
According to her, the conference is a gathering of youths drawn from across the country to meet and talk about climate issues that are affecting them, “We want them to talk about them and proffer solutions to these issues.”
She informed the participants that real-climate change isn’t just about rising temperatures or melting ice caps but it’s about the very air they breathe, the food they eat, and the world they’ll pass on to the next generation, stressing that: “but here’s the thing: we’re not just here to talk about problems, we’re here to brainstorm, innovate, and ignite action!”
Ajufoh charged them not to see themselves as just attendees at the conference, but as change-makers, innovators, and leaders in the making.
She said: “Whether you’re passionate about sustainable agriculture, tech-driven solutions, renewable energy, or just keeping our planet clean, there’s a place for you here. This conference is your stage to shine, to share ideas, and to collaborate with others who are just as fired up as you are.
“We’ve got an amazing lineup of speakers and panelists who are here to inspire, challenge, and equip you with the tools to make a real difference. But this event isn’t just about listening, it’s about engaging, questioning, and sharing your own ideas.”
Furthermore, she charged the youth: “Don’t be shy; your voice matters, and together, we can create a ripple effect that goes beyond Bauchi, beyond Nigeria, and touches the entire world.
“So, let’s make this day count! Get ready to network, to learn, and to have some fun while we’re at it. Climate action is serious business, but who says we can’t enjoy the journey?”
Also speaking at the conference in a goodwill message, the Commissioner for Environment in Bauchi State, Danlami Kawule, commended the organizers of the momentous occasion that will be remembered as a turning point in the nation’s collective efforts to address the pressing issues of climate change.
According to him, the theme of the conference: “Building Bridges for Climate Action,” could not be more timely or relevant than it is now in a world where climate change presents challenges that cross borders and generations, “it is essential that we build strong bridges—bridges between communities, between the public and private sectors, and most importantly, between generations.”
“The youth gathered here today are not just the future leaders; you are the current driving force behind the climate action movement. Your voices, your ideas, and your energy are crucial in shaping a sustainable future for all.
“I want to take a moment to extend my deepest appreciation to the organizers of this event, the Community Advocate for Rural Development (CARD). Your tireless commitment, vision, and dedication have made this conference a reality. Bringing together such a diverse group of young leaders and environmental advocates from across the nation is no small feat, and your efforts have created a powerful platform for collaboration, learning, and action.
“To the youth participants, I am inspired by your passion and commitment. You are here because you understand that the future of our planet depends on the actions we take today. Whether through innovative projects, advocacy, or simply raising awareness, each of you has the power to make a significant impact. The bridges you build here, the connections you make, and the ideas you share will pave the way for a more resilient and sustainable Nigeria,” Kawule added.
Kawule assured that the Ministry of Environment is fully committed to supporting efforts of the organizers geared towards mitigating climate change.
He said: “We stand with you in this fight, ready to collaborate and ensure that your voices are heard at every level of decision-making. Bauchi State is proud to be the host of this first-of-its-kind conference, and we are even prouder of the youth who have gathered here to lead the charge for climate action.
“As we conclude this historic event, let us carry forward the momentum, the inspiration, and the determination to make a difference. The work begins now, and together, we can build a brighter, more sustainable future for ourselves and the generations to come.”
