Just two days after electing a new Speaker, the Benue State House of Assembly has suspended its former Speaker, Mr. Aondona Dajoh, for three months due to his alleged role in a scheme to impeach Governor Hyacinth Alia.
The suspension was enacted during a plenary session in Makurdi on Tuesday, following a motion of urgent public importance raised by Mr. Terna Shimawua, the representative for Kyan constituency.
Shimawua revealed that on August 21, Dajoh convened a meeting at his residence with other lawmakers, allegedly intending to use the gathering to initiate an impeachment process against the Governor.
“If Dajoh’s actions had not been stopped, they could have plunged the state into turmoil,” Shimawua stated.
The motion was supported by Mr. Abu Umoru, representing Apa constituency, who asserted, “The former Speaker’s conduct merits this suspension.”
Presiding over the session, the newly elected Speaker, Mr. Alfred Emberga, condemned Dajoh’s actions as unacceptable and ruled for a three-month suspension from legislative duties.
Tensions between Governor Alia and Dajoh had reportedly been simmering, with sources indicating a power struggle, including plans from the Governor’s camp to oust Dajoh as Speaker and counter-efforts from Dajoh’s allies to target the Governor.
However, the Benue State Government has firmly denied any involvement in efforts to remove or suspend Dajoh.
