Berlin court has ruled in favor of German comedian Sebastian Hotz, known as “El Hotzo,” acquitting him of charges related to his social media posts about the assassination attempt on US President Donald Trump.
According to the court, Hotz’s comments, which compared the attempt to missing the last bus and stated, “I think it’s absolutely fantastic when fascists die,” were deemed “non-punishable satire.”
The prosecution had argued that Hotz’s posts, which reached 740,000 followers, could disturb the peace and incite violence. However, the judge emphasized that satire is protected under German law, and Hotz’s comments, though potentially distasteful, did not cross the line into incitement.
The case sparked debate about the limits of free speech and the role of satire in public discourse. Hotz’s acquittal reinforces the importance of protecting creative expression, even when it pushes boundaries.
