A devastating bomb explosion has rocked Gwabro village in Tangaza Local Government Area of Sokoto State, killing 6 males and injuring 3 females.
The incident occurred on Sunday afternoon during Eid-el-Kabir (sallah) celebrations, when the victims, mostly youths, were visiting relatives and paying Salah homage.
According to an eyewitness, Malam Hashimu, the victims stumbled upon a suspected improvised explosive device (IED) believed to have been planted by the Lakurawa terrorists group.
“They were walking from Gwabro to Zurmuku community when they saw the device.
“Probably not knowing what it was, they might have touched it, leading to the explosion,” Hashimu said.
Sokoto State Police Command Spokesperson, ASP Ahmed Rufai, confirmed the incident, stating that 6 males were killed and 3 females sustained severe injuries.
He said the injured were rushed to Tangaza General Hospital, where they are receiving treatment.
The victims have been buried according to Islamic rites, according to Alhaji Garzali Raka, Special Adviser on Security Matters to the Tangaza local government chairman. Locals have expressed concern over the increasing notoriety of the Lakurawa group, which has been terrorizing communities, extorting, and killing those who cannot pay levies.
A local resident lamented, “These people are not Nigerians, but they have come and continue to invite their people to come… They will come and carry out evil undetected, unapprehended and go back to their country with the spoils of the cold war they declared on us.”
