Rep. Abuna in a statement issued and signed by his media aide, and made available to newsmen in Maiduguri, extended his condolence to the victims, describing the incident a deep sad and a painful blow to the vulnerable community.
According to reports, the fire incident, which occurred earlier over the weekend, wreaked havoc on the camp, destroying property worth millions of naira and leaving many families in a state of despair.
Hon. Abuna, in response, voiced his concern about the magnitude of the loss and the suffering endured by the affected households. He acknowledged the harsh realities displaced persons face and emphasized that such tragedies further worsen their living conditions.
The statement added that the lawmaker called for immediate intervention from relevant authorities and humanitarian organizations to cushion the impact of the disaster.
He stressed the urgent need for emergency relief materials, including shelter, food, and medical support, to help the victims recover.
Hon. Abuna noted that collective support from government, individuals, and NGOs is essential in providing a sense of hope and stability for the affected persons.
He however emphasized the importance of proactive measures to prevent similar occurrences in the future. He advocated for better fire safety awareness within IDP camps and the implementation of effective emergency response strategies.
According to him, such steps will not only protect lives and property but also restore a sense of security and dignity among displaced persons.
“It is truly heartbreaking to witness the loss of livelihoods and property in a community that has already suffered so much,”
“I deeply sympathize with all the victims and urge every stakeholder — from government agencies to compassionate individuals to rally around them and provide the necessary support to rebuild their lives,” Hon Abuma said.
Hon. Abuna offered prayers for the souls of those who may have lost their lives in the tragic incident and wished a speedy recovery to those injured.
He also urged the Borno State Government and emergency agencies to conduct a thorough investigation into the cause of the fire and ensure preventive measures are put in place.
