As part of its efforts to eliminate quacks, substandard projects and other sharp practices in the building sectors, The Chartered Institute of Project Managers of Nigeria (CIPMN) has called on the Federal Government to employ the service of professionals who have been licenced to carry out projects in the country.
The Chairman and the President of CIPMN, Dr. Mrs. Victorial Okoronkwo made the call on Friday during the 7th edition of membership induction and issuance of practice license in Abuja.
She said: “The Programme for today is to issue practicing license to project managers. This would enable people know that projects can’t be done anyhow in the country and at the end of the day it would be collapsing or abandoned. It’s no longer business as usual. That’s why we decided to issued this today in order for them have an authority to work.
Mrs. Okoronkwo, who lamented over the increasing rate of building collapse and projects abandonment in the country, urged MDAs of the federation to include CIPMN Professional Practicing Instrument as a pre-qualification requirement for bidding and awards of all projects contract.
She aslo called on the Council of Establishment of the Federation to expedite actions on its pending proposal, which requested that Project Management cadres should be included in the Scheme of the service in the federation both government and private sectors.
She said: This is so critical since the federal government is desirous of entrenching sanity in projects delivery in the country by establishing the The Chartered Institutes of Project Managers of Nigeria”.
“It is therefore, only natural that charity should start from home. While all hands are on deck to take the independent practitioners to task. The ideal and professional thing to do is to recognize CIPMN’s Certified Projects Managers in the various MDAs by creating Projects/ Career growth path in the Scheme of Services”.
“Immediately the employment of “CIPMN” members commences, we believe that this sharp practices would stop. That’s why we were at Federal Ministry of Establishment for the Ministry to put them in the cadres, where they belong to enable them act in Federal Government and private projects.
“They should start involving Project Managers. Because in most of the projects in the country, no body answers projects managers. But what we have in the management of the projects are subject matter experts, such as the engineers, architects etc. But this time around, what we are saying is that with your areas of specialization you should be a member of this institute to perform very well.
“The CIPMN acts state it clearly, that if you’re not a member you can’t practice project management in the country. If you do, we look at you as quack”, she emphasized.
She further reiterated the need for effective collaboration with sister professional bodies by encouraging them to be registered by CIPMN for proper management training.
On her part, The Registrar/Secretary of the Council, Hajiya Hajara Yusuf urged the newly inducted members to be good ambassadors of CIPMN, adding that the responsibility of developing Nigeria through effective projects management lies on its members.
Hajiya Yusuf, who noted that the council has over 110 members, said it’s working with relevant government agency like the Bureau of Public Enterprises in ensuring proper documentation and monitoring of its members handling various projects nation wide.
Major highlights of the event were the presentation of the newly registered CIPMN members to the president for induction, the administration of oaths of allegiance, issuance of practicing licence and certificates to the inductees, and group photographs.
