Cross River State House of Assembly
By PATRICK ABANG, Calabar –
Cross River State House of Assembly has suspended Theresa Ushie, the Chairman of Bekwarra Local Government Council, for three months over allegations of misconduct and corrupt practices.
The suspension was made in accordance with Section 14(3) of the Cross River Local Government Laws, 2025.
The assembly has set up a committee to thoroughly investigate the allegations raised against the chairman.
The Speaker, Elvert Ayambem, urged the panel to be fair and thorough in their investigation, saying, “The panel should be fair and thorough in the task of investigating the allegations against the chairman.”
During the suspension, the Vice Chairman, Egbung Odama, will take charge of the council affairs in an acting capacity.
This development follows an attempt by councilors to impeach the chairman three months ago over similar allegations.
The allegations against the chairman include corruption, misconduct, and abuse of power.
The assembly’s decision to suspend her is aimed at ensuring a thorough investigation into the allegations and maintaining transparency in the council’s operations.
