In what could be described as a game-changing achievement, the Dangote Refinery, established by Africa’s richest man, Aliko Dangote, is set to begin operations and meet Nigeria’s fuel supply requirement.

The refinery, located in the Dangote Industries Free Zone, Ibeju-Lekki, Lagos, Nigeria, has been designed to process crude oil grades from the three continents of Africa, Asia, and America and deliver a surplus of about 38 million litres of petrol, diesel, kerosene, and aviation fuel for Nigeria daily.

According to a statement obtained from the company, the facility could support the establishment of 26,716 filling stations, create 100,000 direct and indirect jobs, and provide a $21bn market for Nigerian crude oil annually. The refinery is expected to meet the 100% fuel supply requirement of the country and produce a daily surplus of 20 million litres of petrol, one million litres of kerosene, one million litres of JetA1, and 16 million litres of diesel.

The Dangote Refinery is a subsidiary of Dangote Industries Limited and has a capacity to refine 650,000 barrels of crude oil per day while also producing Euro-V quality gasoline and diesel, as well as jet fuel and polypropylene. The facility is designed to use the latest technology to comply with stringent guidelines and regulations to protect the environment and produce environmentally friendly petroleum products for worldwide markets.

When operational, the Refinery is set to generate over 100,000 direct and indirect jobs for Nigerian youths, easing the availability of products by opening up service stations, 26,716 filling stations, and 129 depots in Nigeria. Also, there will be 16,000 trucks for transport that would create additional jobs. The roll-on/roll-off quay, which was developed by Dangote Industries, will improve the capacity of local logistics, providing over 1,029 trucks.

The Abuja Chamber of Commerce and Industry has applauded Aliko Dangote’s commitment to transforming the Nigerian economy through the Dangote Refinery. The investment is expected to attract foreign capital and significantly reduce Nigeria’s reliance on oil imports.
