Local government elections in Woji Ward 6, Obio/Akpor, Rivers State, faced significant delays on Saturday due to the late arrival of election materials and low voter participation.
A News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) correspondent monitoring the polls reported that by 10:12 a.m., several polling units, including Units 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 15, 29, and 30, had not received election materials, stalling voter accreditation.
At these units, only a small number of voters were seen waiting to cast their ballots, with some engaging in discussions with party agents about the delays. Notably, no security personnel were observed at the polling stations, raising concerns about oversight.
Mr. Kingsley Amadi, a voter at Polling Unit 29, expressed frustration over the situation.
“I arrived early, but we’re still waiting for the materials. Despite the delay, I’m hopeful for a transparent process,” he said, attributing the low turnout to the political tensions that preceded the election.
Another voter, Oroma, remained optimistic about the democratic process. “I’m confident that this election will reflect the true will of the people,” she told NAN.
The chairmanship and councillorship elections are ongoing across Rivers State’s 23 Local Government Areas, though challenges in logistics continue to impact the process.
