With just months to the 2026 FCT Area Council Election, the Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), Malam Aminu Kasimu Idris, has reaffirmed INEC’s commitment to ensuring the participation of persons with disabilities (PWDs) in the electoral process, as guaranteed by law.
The REC, represented by Mrs. Bimbo Oladunjoye, Administrative Secretary of INEC-FCT, made the statement during a workshop with heads of PWD clusters in the FCT on Wednesday, December 10, 2025.
Malam Idris stressed that the Commission’s electoral inclusion policy is designed to ensure that PWDs are not only recognized but meaningfully included at every stage of the election.
He noted that the engagement was crucial to deepen collaboration between PWDs and INEC’s electoral officers, allowing both parties to identify gaps, address challenges, and refine interventions for improved accessibility.
In her presentation, Mrs. Habiba Jatto, Deputy Director, Inclusivity Division, INEC Headquarters, highlighted the Commission’s efforts to support PWDs, including the provision of Braille guides, magnifying glasses, priority voting procedures, and sensitization programs to encourage electoral participation.
She added that the initiatives would be extended to all six Area Councils ahead of the February 2026 elections.
The workshop, which provided a platform for learning and feedback to ensure an inclusive electoral process, was attended by the Director, Gender and Inclusivity Department, INEC HQ, Assistant Electoral Officers, and select management staff of INEC-FCT and Headquarters.
