Foundation trains journalists on conflict sensitive reporting in Borno

Allamin Foundation for Peace and Development on Thursday in Maiduguri organized a one day media training for journalists on conflict sensitive reporting on transitional Justice and reintegration in Borno State.

The Project Manager, Allamin Foundation, Mr. Samuel Orahii said the training was aimed at exposing the journalists to the nitty gritty of diversity in news reporting as well as identifying the ways and manners issues of the individuals, groups and organisations including environment, religious , ethnic and political affiliation affects contents of news stories written by journalists in conflicts areas like Borno state which is the epic center of the Boko Haram insurgency.

He added that the issues of misconception, perception, strategies and precautions are vital to the combat journalists that report from different sects of the state or society.

The facilitator of the training, Mohammed Auwal Umar of Mass Communication Department, University of Maiduguri, sensitized the participants on the categories and factors of diversity and the possible emerging problems associated with news reporting by the media.

He also elaborated on the unethical issues relating to news writing and reporting while sharing experiences and discussions with the journalists on the consequences of unprofessional conduct and behaviour of the journalists when writing a sensitive issue in the society.

Umar, further, explained extensively on the issues that are possible to ignite tension or conflicts in the society while guiding the journalists on the strategies to be adopted in ensuring peace journalism prevalence in conflict areas.

He also related conflict sensitive reporting and communication to transitional justice particularly amongst the victims of the Boko Haram insurgency.

The NUJ State Secretary, Ali Ibrahim. Chiroma on behalf of the State Chairman of the NUJ, Dauda Iliya, expressed profound gratitude to the foundation for organising such workshop while pledging continuous working relationship with the foundation in a bid to achieve its mandate in the overall interest of humanity.

He also assured that the Maiduguri based working journalists will continue to do the needful and ensure justice prevail and people are enlightened on the human rights issues and transitional justice framework as well policies for effective documentation and implementation.
