By EZEKIEL OBI, Abuja-
The Ndi Igbo Intellectual and Cultural Development Organisation (NIDO) has called on the Federal Government to immortalise the former Chairman of the National Electoral Commission (NEC), late Professor Humphrey Nwosu.
NIDO described Nwosu as the “unsung hero of Nigeria’s democracy” and urged the government to honour him to boost the morale of serving electoral staff.
“We cannot pretend to forget the brain behind the entire process of the June 12, 1993 presidential election, which has been acknowledged as the most credible in Nigeria’s history,” NIDO’s Director of Communications, Mr. Christian Afulike
He said: “It reeks of double standards to recognise the election, its outcome, and yet forget the man who made it all possible.”
NIDO has urged the Federal Government to name a befitting national edifice after the late Nwosu to encourage serving and future electoral umpires to serve with diligence and integrity.
The organisation also called on the Anambra government and other state governments, particularly those in the South East geopolitical zone, to ensure Nwosu’s immortalisation.
The late Prof. Nwosu played a crucial role in Nigeria’s democratic history, and honouring him would be a fitting tribute to his contributions.
NIDO believed.that this would strengthen the nation’s democracy and serve as a reminder of the importance of integrity and diligence in electoral processes.
