Rivers State Governor, Siminlaye Fubara
Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, has restated his position as the duly elected governor of the state, vowing to continue prioritising peace, security, and the safety of lives and property across the state.
The governor gave the assurance on Saturday while speaking as a special guest at the grand finale of the 2026 Port Harcourt Polo Tournament held in Port Harcourt, Channels TV has reported.
Fubara stressed that his administration remains focused on delivering on its promises to the people, insisting that maintaining law and order is a core responsibility of government.
“What is important is that I am still the governor of Rivers State, and we will continue to do what we have promised the Rivers people,” he said.
Expressing satisfaction over the successful hosting of the week-long polo tournament, the governor noted that the absence of any security incident underscored the relative peace and safety in the state.
“I am happy that you had your tournament for one week, and the president of the Port Harcourt Polo Club told me there was no incident. It shows that we are working and that Rivers State is safe. That is the basic responsibility of government,” he added.
However, Fubara lamented the recurring political tensions in the state, observing that they have coincided with the annual polo tournament for three consecutive years.
“It is really unfortunate that each time you are having your tournament, there is always one problem. In 2024, you came to me and made some promises, but that January was hell. In 2025, you didn’t bother to come to me. This 2026, which I thought would be the finest, just landed me a love letter,” he said.
Despite the challenges, the governor assured residents that his administration would remain steadfast in discharging its constitutional responsibilities and would continue to support individuals and organisations genuinely committed to the development of Rivers State.
He also pledged that the state government would collaborate with relevant stakeholders to upgrade the Port Harcourt Polo Club, described as one of the facilities with the best natural grass polo pitches in Nigeria.
Governor Fubara urged guests, polo players, and foreign participants to enjoy the calm atmosphere of Port Harcourt and help counter negative perceptions of the state by sharing positive and factual narratives.
The final match attracted several dignitaries, including the Argentine Ambassador to Nigeria, while polo players from across the country, as well as teams from India and Argentina, took part in the week-long tournament.
