US President Donald Trump has threatened to impose a sweeping 100 per cent tariff on all Canadian goods if Ottawa goes ahead with a proposed trade agreement with China, escalating already tense relations between Washington and its northern neighbour since his return to the White House.
Trump issued the warning on Saturday amid growing friction with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, whose government has openly criticised what it describes as a “rupture” in the US-led global order. The dispute intensified after Carney’s recent visit to Beijing, where he announced a “new strategic partnership” with China that produced a “preliminary but landmark trade agreement” aimed at reducing tariffs.

Reacting on his Truth Social platform, Trump said Carney was mistaken if he believed Canada could serve as a conduit for Chinese goods into the United States. If Carney “thinks he is going to make Canada a ‘Drop Off Port’ for China to send goods and products into the United States, he is sorely mistaken,” the US president wrote.
Trump further warned that, “China will eat Canada alive, completely devour it, including the destruction of their businesses, social fabric, and general way of life,” adding:
“If Canada makes a deal with China, it will immediately be hit with a 100% Tariff against all Canadian goods and products coming into the USA.”
He also referred to Carney as “Governor,” a jab linked to his repeated claim that Canada should become the 51st US state.
The war of words has sharpened in recent days, with Trump declaring, “Canada lives because of the United States. Remember that, Mark, the next time you make your statements.”
Carney responded firmly, saying, “Canada doesn’t live because of the United States. Canada thrives because we are Canadian,” while still acknowledging the “remarkable partnership” between the two countries.
