
The Igbo Welfare Association (IWA) under the umbrella of Ohanaeze Ndigbo in Borno State at the weekend inaugurated new executives to steer its affairs.
The new executives were inaugurated following an election that saw the emergence of Chief Sunday Okonkwo as the new president of the state chapter of the Association.
Our correspondent reports that the event was attended by Igbo traditional leaders in the state, prominent Igbo businessmen and women, representatives of the government of Borno State, leadership of the Yoruba community, representatives of the state Commissioner of Police, the DSS and the Commandant of the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) among other dignitaries.
In his acceptance speech, the newly inaugurated president, Chief Sunday Okonkwo, said his tenure would ensure improved relationship between the association and the state government as well as Emirate Council in the state.
He also promised to unite Igbos in Borno and ensure that everyone is carried along in the affairs of the association, adding that programmes and business seminars would be organised from time to time to enhance capacity of members in their various endeavors.
He thanked the State Governor, Professor Babagana Umara Zulum and the people of Borno for creating enabling environment for peaceful coexistence of Igbos with their host communities.
Other executive members inaugurated are Mr John Mgbobi – Vice President, Mr Levi Nyia – Secretary, Mr Francis Meke – Assistant Secretary, Elder Reuben Onuoha – Treasurer, Mr Benjamin Onwusinachi – Financial Secretary, Mr Ifeanyi Onwuka – Director of Social , Mr Kenneth Mba – Assistant Director of Social, Mr Emmanuel Okpe – PRO, Mr Paschal Ijioma – Publicity Secretary , Mr Augustin Orji – Provost 1, Mr Sunday Onyekaonwu – Provost 11.
Also inaugurated are the newly elected Igbo Youths Association Excos in the state, led by Chief Onyeka Amaizu, who emerged president of the Igbo Youths in the State.
