African Democratic Congress (ADC) Presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar and Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate, Peter Obi, have expressed grief over the tragic train derailment along the Warri–Itakpe rail corridor near Agbor in Delta State, which reportedly claimed lives and left several passengers injured.
The accident, which occurred on Tuesday, has drawn widespread concern across the country, with both political leaders extending condolences to the families of the victims and calling for urgent measures to improve safety within Nigeria’s rail transport system.
In a statement shared on his X account, Atiku described the incident as heartbreaking and conveyed his sympathies to those affected.
“I am deeply saddened by the tragic train accident along the Warri–Itakpe corridor near Agbor, Delta State, which claimed the lives of some Nigerians and left many others injured.
“My heartfelt condolences go to the families and loved ones of those who lost their lives. I also pray for the speedy recovery of those receiving treatment and wish them strength in this difficult time. I extend my sympathies to the people and Government of Delta State over this painful incident. I commend the swift response of the Delta State Government, emergency personnel, and all those involved in the rescue efforts.
“This tragedy is a sobering reminder of the urgent need to strengthen safety standards and emergency preparedness across our transportation system. May God grant eternal rest to the departed, comfort the bereaved, and restore good health to the injured,” Atiku stated.
Similarly, Peter Obi said he received news of the derailment with sadness and urged authorities to carry out a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the accident.
“I just received the sad news of the train derailment along the Warri–Itakpe rail corridor in Delta State.
“My heartfelt sympathy goes out to the families who lost their loved ones in this unfortunate mishap, and I pray for the quick recovery of those injured.
“I urge the relevant authorities to investigate the immediate and remote causes of this derailment swiftly, ensure full accountability, and implement measures to restore public confidence in our rail systems,” Obi said.
The incident has renewed concerns about railway safety in Nigeria, with calls mounting for stricter operational standards, improved maintenance practices and enhanced emergency response mechanisms to prevent similar tragedies.
As investigations are expected to commence, Nigerians continue to mourn those who lost their lives while hoping for the full recovery of the injured passengers.
