Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Niger State has scheduled August 16, 2025, for the conduct of a bye-election in Munya State Constituency.
The bye-election is necessitated by the demise of the constituency’s representative in the State House of Assembly, Mr. Joseph Haruna-Shekwoduza, who passed away on September 13, 2024.
The State Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), Alhaji Ahmed Garki, disclosed this during a stakeholders’ meeting held at the INEC headquarters in Minna.
Garki said, “You will recall that we lost a member representing Munya state constituency through death. Consequently, the commission has fixed Saturday, 16th August 2025, for a bye-election to fill the vacancy.”
The REC provided details of the election, including the number of registration areas, polling units, and registered voters. “Munya has 11 registration areas (Wards) and 119 polling units (PUs), with 62,459 registered voters,” he said.
He added that the commission will deploy 528 poll officials for the election.
Garki noted that the bye-election has a tight timeline, with party primaries scheduled to hold between July 17 and 21, 2025.
The INEC online portal for submission of nomination forms will open on July 22 and close on July 26, 2025. Campaigns will commence on August 2 and end on August 14, 2025.
The REC also announced the resumption of the Continuous Voters Registration (CVR) exercise across the 36 states and FCT, as well as 774 local government INEC offices nationwide. The online pre-registration will commence on August 18, 2025, while the in-person registration will follow on August 25, 2025.
