BY RICHARD ABU, Nasarawa –

The Executive Chairman of Karu Local Government Council, Mr. James Thomas has charged residents of the area to embrace the use of good water and maintain good hygienic environment to avoid the spread of contagious diseases.

The chairman gave the charge today while speaking at the opening ceremony of a one day workshop organised by a Non Governmental Organization (NGO), UN Habitat, at Karu LGA of Nasarawa State.

Mr. Thomas described the workshop as timely as the data generated would enable the council carry out development projects across the eleven council wards and urged staff and other participants to take the training seriously.

In their paper presentations, two guest speakers, Professor Johnson Bodefalade and Professor David Alachi of the University of Jos, who spoke on the theme”” General Over view of Karu Urban Profile”” decried the lopsided population and development in the urban centres of the local government.

They assured that the pilot study carried out would provide data and template for the local government to decongest urban centres through the provision of roads and other infrastructures.

In his remarks, the Special Adviser to the Governor Abdullahi Sule on Urban Development, Dr. Hajara Danyaro, said there is need for development partners and the federal government to construct roads and electricity to link development areas like Panda and Karshi in order to decongest places like Mararaba, Ado, one-man village among other semi-urban areas.

Earlier in her speech, the Human Settlement Officer of the UN Habitat, Omoayena Odunbaku said the aim of the workshop was to develop the capacity and mobilize the people of Karu LGA into embracing the development.

Odunbaku, however, appreciated the the Karu LG council and the Nasarawa State Government for embracing the programme.
