Anglican priest, Venerable Edwin Achi, and his wife in bandits den
Kaduna State has been thrown into mourning following confirmation that the Anglican priest, Venerable Edwin Achi, kidnapped late October, has died while in the hands of his captors.
His wife, Sarah Achi, is still being held, deepening anxiety among family, church members and residents of the Nissi community in Chikun Local Government Area.
The couple was taken from their residence on October 28, 2025, in a brazen night invasion near the Kaduna Refinery.
Their abduction became public the following day after the kidnappers sent disturbing proof-of-life photographs to the family, according to SaharaReporters.
The images showed the priest, his wife, and several other victims looking severely distressed—some chained and visibly malnourished—as the gang demanded a staggering ₦600 million ransom.
A family source, speaking late Wednesday, confirmed the grim development, saying the Priest-in-Charge of Ebenezer Anglican Church, Ungwan Maijero, “didn’t make it out alive.”
No details were provided on the circumstances surrounding his death, and the kidnappers have reportedly given no further information about Sarah’s condition.
The tragedy adds to mounting concerns over escalating insecurity in Kaduna.
Only days earlier, two police officers were killed in Southern Kaduna when armed men stormed the Divisional Police Headquarters in Zonkwa, Zangon Kataf Local Government Area, during a night assault.
As the community reels from yet another devastating attack, calls for stronger security interventions continue to grow louder.
