Flood hits Lagos State after heavy rainfall
By OLA MODUPE, Lagos–
Lagos State Government has appealed to residents to remain calm following 12 hours of heavy rainfall that has caused widespread flooding across the city.
The Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Mr. Tokunbo Wahab, assured residents that the state has put in place resilient infrastructure to combat flash flooding.
Be Alert, Not Panicked
Wahab explained that the peculiar nature of Lagos as a coastal city and climate change makes it susceptible to flash flooding. “This will result in a tidal lock which will prevent discharge from all collectors,” he said.
Residents living in low-lying areas are advised to be alert, as they are at risk of experiencing flash floods.
Safety Precautions
The Commissioner urged parents to keep their children indoors and avoid playing in floodwaters.
“All areas that are abutting the rivers and lagoons in Lagos are also at risk of experiencing flash floods which may come with high currents,” he warned.
Motorists and pedestrians are also advised not to wade through floods to avoid accidents.
Wahab emphasized the importance of maintaining drainage channels to prevent flash flooding.
“The state is intensifying the year-round cleaning and maintenance of all drainage channels as well as awarding contracts for the concrete lining of new ones,” he said.
Residents are also warned against disposing of refuse into drains, as this can block the drains and cause flash floods.
The Nigerian Meteorological Agency has warned of heavy rainfall and thunderstorms for the next three days. Residents are advised to take necessary precautions and stay informed about weather updates.
