Large-scale drone attacks target several Russian regions

Explosion Ukraine Russia

Russia came under a large-scale Ukrainian drone attack overnight, with reports of damage flowing in from a half-dozen regions on Wednesday morning.

This is thought to be the biggest drone raid on Russian territory since Moscow launched the all-out invasion of its neighbour in February 2022.

In the city of Bryansk, near the Ukrainian border, the building housing an investigative authority was damaged by falling debris, the local administration reported on its Telegram channel.

Alexander Bogomaz, the Governor of Bryansk said a total of six drones were shot down.

In the neighbouring Orlov region, the number of reported drone downing stood at two.

In the Kaluga region south-west of Moscow, the governor said two drones were attacked.

One was shot down and damaged the façade of a residential building; the other crashed into an empty fuel depot and exploded.

To the south-east of the Russian capital, two drones were intercepted overnight in the Ryazan region.

Media, citing witnesses, also reported explosions in the area of an industrial plant in the Tula region south of Moscow, which is known for its arms industry.

According to the report, the officials are yet to comment.

Hours earlier, there were reports that four Il-76 military transports were stationed at an airport in the Pskov region.

Pskov region that borders Latvia and Estonia had been destroyed when dozens of drones struck.

In addition, a fuel depot went up in flames.

A spokesman for the fire brigade said that the blaze had been brought under control and that there was no danger of it spreading.

Eight take-offs and landings flights planned for Wednesday at the Pskov airport were cancelled, the aviation regulator Rosaviatsiya announced on Telegram.

It said safety measures were being strengthened.

Russia has been waging an unprovoked war against Ukraine for 18 months.

For months, Russian regions have been increasingly complaining about the rising number of Ukrainian drone attacks.

However, the number of victims and the severity of the damage are dwarfed by the level of deaths and destruction inflicted on Ukraine. (dpa/NAN)
