“We need discernment in what we see and what we hear and what we believe”

Chase Your Interests with Discernment
If there is one thing closest to the heart of every human beings, it is the issue of interest. Everyone has one interest or the other. People have various interests, desires, dreams, ambitions, goals and plans that they want to achieve in their lives, both in the short and long term. These desires in themselves are expected of any human person because every person seeks his or her survival.

However, for a true follower of Christ Jesus, we do not only seek the things of the earth. For, “If we have put our hope in Christ for this life only, we should be pitied more than anyone” (1 Cor.15:19).

We know that our lives do not just end here on earth, rather “The world is passing away with all its desires (cravings), but the person who does the will of God remains forever” (1 John 2:17). So, as born again Christians who allow themselves to be guided by the Holy Spirit, we simply cannot chase our interests in this world selfishly.

Rather, believers must employ discernment so that their pursuit on earth is done in Christ and enabled by the grace and mercy of Christ Jesus.

Your desires, intentions, prayers and dreams are known to God and God cares about every bit of it, beyond your imagination. But very often we take the driver’s seat alone and pilot our affairs without discerning our way/path with God.

Rather, “Take delight in the Lord, and he will give you the desires of your heart” (Psalm 37:4).

Even as we chase after various interests, it is crucial that we live our lives in discernment and choose what is right and pure, above what brings us guilt, lack of peace and lack of fulfilment in the long run.

Ezekiel 44:23 says, “Moreover, they shall teach my people the difference between holy and the profane and cause them to discern between the unclean and the clean.”

“When a country is rebellious, it has many rulers, but a ruler with discernment and knowledge maintains order.” (Proverbs 28:2)

“This is a time when all of God’s people need to keep their eyes and their Bibles wide open. We must ask God for discernment as never before.” ( David Jeremiah)

As we move towards the 2023 elections in Nigeria, our times calls for much prayer and discernment in all our ways. Believers in Christ Jesus can take their authority in Christ and pray that God’s light outshines every form of darkness orchestrated within and against the people of Nigeria.

For we are “to keep Satan from taking advantage of us; for we are not ignorant of his schemes” (2 Cor. 2:11).

Jesus told those who believe in Him, “Behold, I have given you authority to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy, and nothing shall hurt you” (Luke 10:19).

We come against every form of insecurity, and all those perpetuating any form of disturbances, that, “Whoever digs a pit [for another man’s feet] will fall into it, And he who rolls a stone [up a hill to do mischief], it will come back on him” Proverbs 26:27 (Amp).

Deuteronomy 32:28-29: “They are a nation without sense, there is no discernment in them. If only they were wise and would understand this and discern what their end will be!”

Romans 12:2: “Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.”

Prayer: Activate my senses oh Lord to discern your will in my life, and that I may use my gifts in the Spirit of discernment to help others come to know and experience you. In Jesus name, Amen.

We ask you, dear God: “So, give your servant a discerning heart to govern your people and to distinguish between right and wrong. For who is able to govern this great people of yours?” (1 kings 3:9).
