Manchester City announced the acquisition of Italian goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma from Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) on Tuesday, following the departure of their long-time goalkeeper Ederson to Fenerbahce.
The 26-year-old Donnarumma, who signed a five-year contract for a reported £26 million ($35 million), will don the number 99 jersey at the Etihad.
A key figure in PSG’s Champions League triumph last season and Italy’s Euro 2020 victory, Donnarumma found himself sidelined at PSG after the club signed Lucas Chevalier from Lille.
“Joining Manchester City is a proud and unforgettable moment,” Donnarumma said.
“This is a team led by Pep Guardiola, one of football’s greatest managers, and a club every player dreams of joining.”
Standing at 1.96 meters, Donnarumma began his career at AC Milan, debuting at 16, before moving to PSG in 2021. With 412 club appearances and 74 caps for Italy, his experience is a major coup for City. “Gianluigi’s track record and quality are exceptional,” said City’s director of football, Hugo Viana.
“His arrival is a massive boost for us as we aim for sustained success.”
Meanwhile, City bid farewell to Ederson, who joined Fenerbahce for a reported £12 million.
The 32-year-old Brazilian, hailed as “one of the most successful players in the club’s history,” was pivotal in City’s possession-based style under Guardiola.
Despite his stellar distribution, concerns over his shot-stopping emerged last season.
Ederson, who won six Premier League titles, two FA Cups, and the 2023 Champions League, leaves with 122 clean sheets in 276 league games.
“Playing for City has been the most special time of my life,” Ederson said in a heartfelt statement. “I’m leaving a big family here, but I’ll always be a fan of this incredible club.”
City also signed Burnley’s James Trafford during the transfer window, though the young Englishman has yet to impress.
Additionally, the club confirmed that Swiss defender Manuel Akanji has joined Inter Milan on a season-long loan. (NAN)
