Minister presents N48.3 million cheque to UNIMAID for cancer research

The Minister of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development, Hajiya Sadiya Umar Farouq has presented the sum of N48.3 million cheque to the Department of Pharmacology, University of Maiduguri (UNIMAID) for research on cancer disease.

Hajiya Farouq gave the commendation in Maiduguri on Wednesday during a three day state working visit to Borno State to inspect projects in the state.

She also commissioned the Center for the Study of Violent Extremism (CSVE) complex which was constructed by the North East Development Commission (NEDC).

The medical equipment were donated to the Military hospital 7 Division NA Maiduguri, Federal Neuro Psychiatric Hospital and The University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital, Maiduguri.

The minister commended the contractor for delivering the project within the 6 months timeframe. She said the center will be a reference point for the whole world and standard Research center for pharmacologists.

The Minister who was represented by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Dr. Nasiru Sani Gwarzo, also commended the efforts of the Nigerian Military for the improvement of security and restoration of peace in Borno State and other parts of the north east.

Earlier, the Managing Director of NEDC, Alhaji Mihammed Goni Alkali, said the commission priroitized peace and security as parts of its mandate which informed the reason why paramount importance is given to safety of the people..

“Without peace and security there wouldn’t be any meaningful development, as

such, the commission decided to support the military with some medical equipments for the treatment of casual soldiers who may have sustained injury during its operations to boost their morale and and enhance medical and healthcare services delivery”.

He urged the military to continue to cooperate with the commission to serve humanity while calling on them to ensure the safe rescue of persons in Boko Haram captivity.

While the Theater Commander, Operation Hadin Kai, Major General Chris G. Musa thanked the federal government, Bonro state government and NEDC for their untiring support to the Nigeria Army and assured the continuous loyalty of the military and effective restoration of peace in the north east.

He said the army would ensure proper and effective use of the medical equipment.

In his goodwill message, the Vice Chancellor of the University of Maiduguri, Prof. Aliyu Shugaba, appreciated the federal government and the NEDC for the establishment of the research center, while calling for continuous partnership and support.
