With nationwide protests looming on Monday over the continued detention of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) has declared all correctional facilities across the country as high-security “red zones.”
In a statement released Sunday in Abuja, NCoS spokesperson Abubakar Umar warned the public to steer clear of all custodial centres, stressing they remain restricted areas under tight surveillance.
“The public is hereby informed that all correctional centres are declared as red zones,” Umar stated.
“The NCoS reiterates that correctional centres are restricted areas. Anyone who has no official business therein should stay off to avoid any untoward incidents or security breaches.”
The advisory comes amid growing concerns about potential security threats tied to the planned protests calling for the release of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) leader.
Umar urged Nigerians to remain law-abiding and to cooperate with law enforcement personnel in maintaining peace during the demonstrations.
He emphasized that respecting restricted zones like correctional centres is crucial to preventing any form of disruption or breach of security.
