In a big move to stop cervical cancer in Nigeria, the North-East Development Commission (NEDC) recently finished training 34 O&G doctors from different hospitals in the region.

The week long training, which ended on Wednesday, December 6,.was part of the commitment to improve healthcare in the subregion. It was done in collaboration with the Federal University of Humanitarian Science Azare (FUHSA), University of Miami (UM), Elimination of Cervical Cancer Nigeria Initiative (ECCNI), the Nigeria Cancer Society (NCS), and the AMEN Foundation.

After the training, the NEDC succeeded in enhancing the capacities of 34 O&G doctors as well as 336 health workers, including nurses and midwives, in 112 local government areas of the zone.

The goal, according to the officials, is to help these workers detect and manage cases of cervical cancer.

“The practical part of the training was really important. I got to do real screenings, which made me better at helping people with cervical cancer,” said a health worker from Adamawa State.

The training also taught the healthcare workers the important of early detection of cervical cancer.

“Now that I finished the training, I want to use what I learned to help catch cervical cancer early in my community,” said one of the trainees, a midwife from Taraba State.

In Taraba state, Dr. Batulu Isa Muhammad from the NEDC, who supervised the training and visited an office that helps fight cervical cancer, said:

“The NEDC is dedicated to taking a comprehensive approach to eliminate cervical cancer. This involves promoting collaboration, ownership, and sustainability among all stakeholders for the ultimate benefit of the people.”
