Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has issued a caution to Nigerians holding U.S. visas, advising them to adhere strictly to the terms and conditions of their visa applications.
This advisory follows concerns raised by the U.S. Government over the misuse of visas by some Nigerian citizens.
According to the NIS, visa holders must comply with the purpose stated in their applications to avoid severe penalties.
Consequences of Visa Misuse
The NIS warned that breaching visa conditions, including overstaying, can lead to visa revocation, deportation, and even permanent ineligibility for future travel to the U.S.
“Any breach of immigration or other laws can lead to visa revocation or deportation,” the Service Public Relations Officer, Akinsola Akinlabi, stated.

The U.S. authorities conduct thorough security screenings beyond the initial point of entry, and visa holders are expected to comply fully with immigration regulations.
The NIS also issued a specific advisory for Nigerian students in the U.S., urging them to remain in active study programs and avoid unauthorized withdrawal or absenteeism.
“Such actions could result in visa cancellation and the loss of future eligibility for U.S. travel,” Akinlabi cautioned.
Students are expected to maintain good academic standing and comply with the terms of their student visas.
*Visa Denials*
The NIS warned that U.S. consular officers reserve the right to deny tourist visas to applicants suspected of intending to travel for the purpose of giving birth to secure U.S. citizenship for their children.
This highlights the need for Nigerians to use visas responsibly and in accordance with the stated purpose of their application.
Collaboration with U.S. Authorities
The NIS assured that it will continue to collaborate with the U.S. Mission in Abuja to ensure that Nigeria is not included in any expanded visa restrictions.
This partnership aims to maintain a secure and transparent visa process for legitimate travelers.
The NIS is calling on all Nigerian citizens to comply with U.S. visa rules, emphasizing that responsible behavior is essential to safeguarding legitimate travel opportunities. By adhering to visa conditions and regulations, Nigerians can maintain their eligibility for future travel to the U.S. and avoid severe penalties.
