Nigeria Government has launched a ₦729 billion Series 2 Power Sector Bond as part of efforts to settle outstanding debts in the electricity sector and improve power supply across the country.
The Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Wale Edun, announced the initiative at an Investor Forum in Abuja. He said the new issuance follows the successful ₦520 billion Series 1 bond, which was fully subscribed and has already entered its repayment phase.
According to the minister, the bond is being issued under the Presidential Power Sector Debt Reduction Programme and will be used to clear verified obligations owed to electricity generation companies (GenCos) and gas suppliers.
He explained that the intervention is expected to improve liquidity in the power sector, increase the availability of generating plants, and restore investor confidence, ultimately leading to more reliable electricity supply.
The minister also highlighted the broader economic outlook, noting that Nigeria recorded 3.9 per cent economic growth in the first quarter of 2026. He urged investors to continue partnering with the government as it implements reforms aimed at stabilising the economy and attracting long-term investment.
