
Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has issued a weather forecast predicting widespread thunderstorms and rainfall across Nigeria from Monday to Wednesday, according to a statement released on Sunday in Abuja.
On Monday morning, NiMet expects “isolated thunderstorms accompanied by moderate rainfall” in Kaduna, Gombe, Bauchi, Kebbi, Adamawa, and Taraba states. By the afternoon and evening, similar conditions are forecast across the northern region, with a risk of flash flooding in Adamawa, Taraba, and Gombe.
In the central region, a “cloudy atmosphere with intervals of sunshine” is anticipated in the morning, with moderate rainfall over Niger, Kogi, Kwara, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), and Benue. Thunderstorms and moderate rains are expected later in the day across most central areas.
In the southern region, cloudy skies will prevail in the morning, with moderate rains forecast for Ekiti, Ondo, Rivers, Akwa Ibom, and Cross River states, extending to most southern areas by the afternoon.
On Tuesday, the northern region will see “cloudy skies with patches of sunshine,” with isolated thunderstorms and moderate rainfall over Borno, Kaduna, Gombe, Bauchi, Taraba, and Adamawa in the morning. By the afternoon, thunderstorms and moderate rains are expected in Kano, Jigawa, Yobe, Katsina, Zamfara, Kebbi, and Taraba. The central region will experience cloudy skies with sunshine intervals in the morning, with moderate rains in Kogi, Niger, the FCT, Kwara, and Nasarawa, followed by thunderstorms and moderate rains later in the day. In the south, cloudy skies with moderate rainfall are likely in Oyo, Ekiti, Ondo, Enugu, Anambra, Ebonyi, and Delta in the morning, with light to moderate rains spreading across the region later.
On Wednesday, the northern region will have “cloudy skies with intervals of sunshine,” with a slight chance of thunderstorms and light rain in Sokoto and Zamfara in the morning. By the afternoon, isolated thunderstorms and moderate rains are expected in Borno, Adamawa, Taraba, Kaduna, Zamfara, Kebbi, and Sokoto. The central region will see cloudy skies with sunshine intervals in the morning, with light rains possible in the FCT, Kogi, Kwara, and Niger, followed by thunderstorms and moderate rains later.
The southern region will experience cloudy skies in the morning, with moderate rainfall expected across most areas by the afternoon.
NiMet cautioned that “motorists should exercise caution and avoid driving during heavy rainfall” to ensure safety. Farmers were advised to refrain from applying fertilizers or pesticides before rain to prevent nutrient loss.
The agency also recommended that residents “secure loose objects, unplug electrical appliances, and avoid tall trees” to minimize risks during storms. Airline operators were urged to consult airport-specific weather reports for effective planning.
